Indiyah has always loved to express herself through her hair, changing up her style regularly with hair extensions and wigs. After wearing tape extensions during her time in the Love Island villa last summer she found them easy to wear and wanted to share her experience on why she loves using hair extensions.
Indiyah is famous for her iconic “skunk stripes”, which in the past she has had bleached regularly into her own hair, making her natural hair dry and damaged in the process. She wanted to add more blonde through her hair, for more of a striped effect, but was worried about how this could further damage her own hair. We worked with Indiyah to recreate her signature stripes by using bright blonde extensions for a highlighted effect, without the need for bleaching her hair further.
Did you know that you can use hair extensions to add lighter tones without dying or bleaching your own hair? You can use all professional hair extension methods to add colour, but individual methods such as tapes, micro ring or pre-bonded are especially suitable. Individual methods are applied in smaller sections so it is easy to mix different tones and add instant highlights. You can opt for a high contrast look like Indiyah by mixing blonde with a darker base, or choose balayage or blonde tones 1 or 2 shades lighter than your natural hair for a more subtle look.

When did you first try tape extensions?
The first time i actually tried Tape hair extensions was before I went into the villa last summer, I did this because going to Majorca it’s very hot and you don’t actually get that much time to spend on your hair getting ready. I wanted to do a hairstyle that was easy to maintain and I could be quite versatile with so I thought tapes would be the best option. I had my hair in so many different styles whilst we were filming and it was really easy to do with my extensions in.
How did you use extensions to add colour and get your desired look? What look did you want to create?
I had a consultation with a hairdresser on what method of extensions would work best for me and we agreed on tapes. We mixed shades Molly-Mae and Jet Set Black in 22” Slimline Tape Extensions to create my signature “skunk stripe” look. As you guys know, I’m known for having my signature skunk stripes. Obviously I can't keep up with bleaching my hair 24/7 as it can be quite damaging, so that’s where extensions come into play. For example I’ve got tape extensions in but I haven’t even touched up my roots, and it gives the impression that I’ve just had fresh blonde highlights done without any of the damage that actually comes with it. You can use extensions in any shade or any style to add colour, which is great for if you want to experiment with different looks.
Why do you like wearing hair extensions?
I love to wear hair extensions because I’m a versatile girl, and I love changing up my hairstyle. With my tape extensions I can wear them up, down, in a half-up, straight, curly, wavey - the options are endless! As a content creator, it’s really important for me to be able to switch up my look, and extensions give me that freedom.
How do hair extensions give you confidence?
When I have my extensions in I feel confident to rock whatever hairstyle I want to do and it will always look good. It gives me the freedom to express myself! One thing I would say that adds to my confidence is it’s nice to be able to just wake up in the morning and you’re good to go. My hair’s already looking good and it takes that stress away.
What’s been the thing that’s surprised you most about wearing extensions?
The thing that surprised me the most about extensions is how lightweight they are! With the right maintenance and products they last such a long time, and I literally had the same hair in the whole time I was on Love Island! I naturally have textured, curly hair but when I want to switch it up with a smoother, straighter look I love using tape extensions.
What advice would you give to someone who is looking to try hair extensions?
My best piece of advice for anyone looking to get any type of hair extension is to make sure you do your research. There are so many different types of extensions so it’s important you have looked into which method will be best for you. When I had my tape extensions fitted I had a consultation with my hairdresser beforehand where we discussed what I wanted extensions for and which type would be best for me to achieve that.
What’s your favourite Beauty Works product?
My favourite Beauty Works product is the Luxury Boar Bristle Brush, I am a huge fan of all their brushes but this one is my all time favourite as it’s huge! I use it on my extensions and my natural hair and the bristles are soft enough on your hair to stop as much breakage but also strong enough for me to use to get a slicked back look, and as you guys know I love to rock a ponytail from time to time. A good brush really helps me to achieve that snatched, slick back look!
